Latvia's fish industry has applied changes to its health and safety practices after Russia's agriculture regulator banned fish imports from the country.
Russia banned imports of canned fish from Latvia and Estonia on June 4 because of importers' failure to meet health and safety requirements. The main reason for the ban was a high benzopyrene concentration in the fish, which come from the highly-polluted Baltic Sea.
"I think the Russian market will open, and I hope there are no problems here. There were requirement made that we fulfilled with the Food and Veterinary Service," board member of Latvian fish producer Gamma-A Igor Kushnerchuk told BNS news agency.
Vaiders added that the service must now prepare its comments on the changes and send them to the Russian regulator, which will decide on further actions, such as the renewal of imports.
