Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov has delivered a speech at the 8th Annual Conference of the Russian American Science Association (RASA-USA) in Chicago, outlining his views on the cooperation between Russian and American scientists.

CHICAGO (Sputnik) — According to Antonov, the relations between the US and Russian scientists may "serve to cement the base for the rapprochement of the two countries."

Meanwhile, Antonov stressed that RASA-USA is a good example of how science and education remain out of politics.

Dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the US-Russian chemist and NWU professor Vladimir Ipatieff, this year the conference of the Russian American Science Association (RASA-USA) is being held for the eighth time. About 200 representatives of the scientific diaspora, Russian universities, as well as participants from Skolkovo, Skoltech, Rusnano, and Rusal, are taking part in the event.

Russian cosmonaut and the commander of Expedition 53/54 Alexander Misurkin has addressed the members of the conference from the board of the International Space Station via video link.

"I sincerely wish you to hold this conference very well and with passion and humor. I want to wish you great success in your scientific and social activities, strong health, happiness, and harmony. Thank you, all, " Misurkin said, adding that he had an opportunity to meet the members of the Association personally in 2016.

"This meeting was as important for me as my first spacewalk. Each of you is an example for me. I appreciate very much your dedication to what you are doing, to the science, your aspiration to help develop the science and education in your homeland, in Russia," Misurkin added.

RASA-USA is an international non-profit non-governmental organization aimed at preserving and improving the common intellectual and cultural space of the Russian-speaking academic community, according to its website.
