MOSCOW (Sputnik) — At least five large Russian banks are being targeted by moderate-intensity cyberattacks since November 8, a source close to the Bank of Russia said Wednesday.
"The Central Bank is aware of these bot-net attacks. Some five banks are been targeted since yesterday," the source told RIA Novosti.
Russia's largest retail bank Sberbank later confirmed that it thwarted a powerful DDoS attack on its servers on Wednesday.
"On November 8, online resources of Sberbank were subject to powerful DDoS attacks. The attacks were organized from bot-nets including dozens of machines geographically distributed among several dozens of countries," a source in Sberbank told RIA Novosti.
The first attack was reportedly registered in the morning, the next one – in the evening consisting of several stages with each of them being twice as powerful as the one before.
"The bank’s defense systems worked reliably, the attack was discovered and localized by special cybersecurity units of Sberbank. There were no failures in the work of the client services," the source added.
The press service of another major Russian bank VTB also told RIA Novosti that the bank’s website had been subject to cyberattacks that had been successfully repelled.
