Trump May Partially Revoke Anti-Russia Sanctions If Elected US President

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Sanctions imposed on Russia over the Ukrainian conflict may be reviewed and partially lifted if Republican nominee Donald Trump becomes next president of the United States, Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity Executive Director Daniel McAdams told Sputnik.

"As far as Donald Trump, and I don’t want to sound like I am praising him, because I am certainly not, but from everything we’ve seen of Trump so far, he’ll probably recognize that sanctions are a really stupid deal. My guess is he would be more inclined to review and revoke some of the sanctions on Russia, maybe making some sort of a deal about it," McAdams said, adding that the sanctions, though meant to affect the Russian economy, also hurt the businesses, citizens and the economy of the United States.

McAdams noted that neither the US President Barack Obama administration nor Hillary Clinton, if elected next US president, will be "backing off of sanctions."

"The Left has always been attracted to sanctions. Sanctions are a form of war, but they are not as overtly bloody as war and that’s why the Left has been attracted to sanctions historically," he explained.

Since 2014, relations between Russia and the West have deteriorated amid the crisis in Ukraine. The United States, the European Union and some of their allies have introduced several rounds of anti-Russia sanctions after Crimea's reunification with Russia and Moscow's alleged involvement in the Ukrainian conflict.

Russia has repeatedly refuted the allegations and warned that the Western sanctions as well as military moves on Russian borders are counterproductive and undermine regional and global stability.
