US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to discuss the strategic importance of the US-India relationship and bilateral defense cooperation, the US Department of Defense said in a press release on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier on Tuesday, Indian Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar announced that the United States and India agreed to sign a mutual military logistics support deal in the coming months, giving both states access to the other’s bases for logistics support.

"The prime minister and the secretary agreed that continued collaboration on defense technology including aircraft carrier design and jet engines will open new opportunities for co-development and co-production and further elevate the relationship," the Defense Department statement said.

Carter told Modi he was optimistic about the "unprecedented military-to-military ties" between the United States and India and the potential for future defense cooperation, according to the Defense Department.

The statement emphasized that the United States views India as a "net exporter of security" and an important part of regional prosperity and stability.
