NEW YORK (Sputnik) — The poll found only 44 percent of New Yorkers approve of the job de Blasio is doing.
De Blasio, who is currently traveling to the US state of California after visiting Washington, has seen his approval rating drop to the lowest point during his first year and a half as Mayor of New York.
“New York City voters approve 55-28 percent of the job NYPD [New York Police Department] Commissioner William Bratton is doing, and approve 56-36 percent of the job police are doing,” according to the poll.
The poll also found a wide racial split between New York City voters, with 56 percent of white voters disapproving of how de Blasio is handling his job as Mayor, and only 19 percent of African American voters disapproving.
“It’s still a tale of two cities,” Quinnipiac University Poll Assistance Director Maurice Carroll said. “Black New Yorkers give the Mayor good marks across the board, including on his chosen duel role as city chief executive and leading national voice.”
Carroll stated the big division is whether New Yorkers think de Blasio understands them. “Black voters give him an enthusiastic yes, white voters don’t think so,” Carroll added.
The poll also found that the majority of New York voters, 57 percent, support the policy of “broken windows” policing, which is a theory that arrests for low-level crimes create an environment that promotes less high-level crimes.
The poll was conducted from May 6-11 and surveyed 969 New York City voters.
