WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — If the US Secret Service wants to improve following the recent incidents of misconduct and security failures, its agents need to be held accountable for their actions, US Senator Jeanne Shaheen said in a statement.
“Money cannot fix a culture that, in the eyes of the public and many in Congress, is broken,” Shaheen said in the statement on Thursday.
To fix the Secret Service’s many problems and rebuild trust will require “the men and women of the Secret Service to take individual responsibility for their actions, and to be accountable to the American people,” she added.
A review of the incident found multiple protocol failures that led to then-Secret Service Director Julia Pierson's resignation, followed by US President Barack Obama appointing Joseph Clancy as the agency’s new Director in February.
In recent weeks, two Secret Service officers drove into a White House complex allegedly under the influence of alcohol, an incident that Clancy admitted to members of the US Congress on Tuesday he only learned about five days later.
